Sh** Just Got Real for the Power Rangers

The Power Rangers like you’ve really really really never seen them before. Don’t watch the video if you cherish your memories of the neon colored, child safe heroes.

Brought to life by film producer and actor Adi Shankar and directed by Joseph Kahn, Power/Rangers is an extremely dark continuation of the Power Rangers storyline, taking place after the end of any existing Power Rangers series, featuring “grown up” versions of the Rangers. The film was released in two versions on February 24, one on Youtube, and a NSFW version (featuring brief nudity) on Vimeo.

Shankar is known for Hollywood films like Dredd and The Grey, but is also well known for his “Bootleg Universe” series of one-shot very unofficial fan takes on well-known titles like James Bond, The Punisher and Judge Dredd.

As Shankar puts it, the Bootleg Universe is his way of creatively reinterpreting [these official characters] without red tape. The first in the series was The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and starred Thomas Jane reprising his role as Frank Castle from the 2004 Punisher film.

The Power/Rangers project, in particular, gained notoriety due to the violent and adult nature of the video and was [shockingly] almost immediately served with a takedown notice by Saban, the original copyright holders of the franchise. However, both versions have since been restored and are chock full of disclaimers now. The NSFW version is here.

The video is defintely worth a view, even if, like me, you never watched the Power Rangers. It stars Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) and James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek). And while you’re at it, check out the rest of Shankar’s Bootleg Universe
