That’s right. Deadwood IS returning. Unfortunately not as a series, but as a (probably) one-and-done movie.

TVLine reports that the head of HBO programming confirmed that series creator David Milch has received the green light to bring back the show in movie format.

If you haven’t had the pleasure, Deadwood was an exceptional show set in the Old West in South Dakota and was, in a word: gritty. It featured fictional as well as historical figures from American history (Seth Bullock, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Wyatt Eearp, George Hearst to name a few) and had an incredibly tight and talented ensemble cast including Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Powers Boothe, and Molly Parker (again, just a few).

Critically acclaimed, the show was norminated for 28 Emmys and won 8 including awards for directing, acting and outstanding drama series. Sadly, the show was cancelled after only 3 short seasons back in 2006.

As Milch still hasn’t written the script, probably best not to hold your breath for a release date, but this is great news still. Milch’s next task will be to corral the cast back together, but I’m confident they’ll make it happen.
